3 Weird Practices of Legendary Leaders
Sometimes, being Legendary requires opposite thinking
So many people have ideas about how to be “Legendary”. Many of those ideas actually end up backfiring! Instead, embrace these 3 practices to get more out of your team!
1. Be Lazy
How can being Lazy make you Legendary?
Most people believe that to be Legendary they have to be the masters of everything and be the best in an organization! This couldn’t be less true. Legendary Leaders often aren’t the best, and have no desire to be the best.
They are AMAZING at the specific few important things they do, but refuse to do anything else which leads to some benefits.
- Forces Leaders to build Legendary Teams to do the other work
- Allows their Teams to become amazing in their own work
- Frees up time for the Legendary Leader to be focused on what’s most important
2. Care Less
But shouldn’t I care the MOST as the Leader?
In a way you absolutely need to care, but most people trying to become Legendary go WAY too far in how much they care! They want their team to ALWAYS be happy, they want to get their hands on EVERYTHING, and they want to make their employees CARE and STAY with the organization.
It ends up becoming a toxic trait the drives people away
- People need to find their own reasons to care — You can’t force them
- Trying to keep people who don’t care hurts your results
- Over-caring leads to you seeming fake and makes great people leave
3. Play Dumb
Sometimes Leaders do have the answer — but that doesn’t mean you have to give it right away.
When you know everything, it becomes problematic. Plus, others hate “know-it-alls”. So, Legendary Leaders sometimes play dumb with tact.
Amazing results can come from simply playing dumb
- Teams Learn to come up with their own solutions
- Often, their solutions end up being better than your ideas
- They gain agency in their lives, which helps everyone win!
I need to thank Dominic Matteo who taught me these rules!
